The Ichthus symbol has been used by Christians since the times of the early Church. During the persecution of Christians in the first few centuries after Christ, the fish symbol was used to mark meeting places and tombs, or to distinguish friends from foes without using words. When a Christian met a stranger on the road, the Christian would draw one arc of the simple fish outline in the dirt with their foot. If the stranger drew the other arc to complete the fish, both believers knew they were in good company and safe.
